Good Eco News
📉 Greenhouse gas emissions in the EU fell by 4% in the last three months of 2022.
💰 GDP increased by 1.5% during the same period, indicating that countries are reducing emissions while growing their economies.
🏭 The manufacturing and household sectors were responsible for the most greenhouse gas emissions, followed by electricity and gas supply, agriculture, transportation, and storage.
⚡ The electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply sector saw the biggest emission cut of 9.7%.
📊 The data is important for green decision-making and can inform initiatives like the European Green Deal.
🌿 More ambitious action is needed to meet the EU's emissions targets of a 55% reduction by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050.
🌬️ Increasing the share of renewable power is one of the ways the EU can achieve its goals.

Green Gadgets
Since I often do the dishes by hand, this has become one of my favorite green gadgets:
However, there are plenty more options that you can explore in this article.

The main problem with recycling is that it is very cost-intensive, hence why it is a business model that has totally failed us.
Worldwide only 9% is being recycled.
But here is a solution to use hard-to-recycle plastics without the need for cleaning or sorting. Meet Byblocks.
ByBlocks have the same dimensions as standard concrete blocks but are about 10 pounds lighter and have Lego-like protrusions on top and cavities underneath for stacking. They're processed by compressing plastic into blocks using steam.
The process is carbon-neutral and does not involve melting the plastic; 30 tons of plastic produce 30 tons of ByBlocks.
The applications reach from sheds, retaining walls, dumpster enclosures, privacy fencing, and furniture.

Startups
This is not a new startup. In fact, it was founded in 2001 by Tom Szaky, the founder of TerraCycle but it deserves more attention, hence why I am mentioning it here.
💡 Loop is a global reuse platform facilitated by a coalition of manufacturers, retailers, and consumers.
♻️ Loop aims to eliminate the concept of waste through its platform.
🔄 Loop operates a reverse supply chain, collecting used packaging from consumers and retailers.
💼 Industry leaders, including Ecolab, collaborate with Loop to ensure safety standards.

Great news about 🦏 the two rhinos being released into Chitwan National Park in Nepal. They are thriving.
🌍 The greater one-horned rhinos native to the Indian subcontinent have faced threats such as poaching, habitat loss, and predators like tigers.
🦏 Chitwan National Park, along with NGOs, has been making efforts to conserve and protect vulnerable species.
Two rhino calves named Pushpa and Anjali were rescued and raised by the National Trust for Nature Conservation.
🏞️ The decision was made to release the rhinos back into the wild to allow them to adapt to their natural habitat and reintegrate with other rhinos in the park.
🌱 The rhino release operation was low-key and low-cost, aiming to show that rewilding can be successful without being expensive.
⚠️ Rhino conservation in Nepal faces challenges, as previous relocations have had mixed success due to poaching and conflicts with farmers.
🌍 Conservation efforts in the area are supported by the government, and the long-term benefits are expected to outweigh the current challenges.

Did You Know?
🐝 Bees play a crucial role in pollinating over 100 fruits and vegetables, including strawberries, potatoes, and apples.
They communicate and make decisions by dancing, using a behavior called "waggle dance."
Bees have been observed using tools, such as collecting animal feces to repel predatory hornets.
"Yellow rain," thought to be chemical warfare residue in the 1980s, was later found to be excretions by massive swarms of wild honeybees (yep they pooped on us).
Bumblebees can damage plant leaves to induce earlier flowering when pollen is scarce.
Humans have been exploiting honeybees for thousands of years, using honey for medicinal purposes and beeswax for various applications.
Some bee species have evolved to eat meat, substituting dead animal carcasses for flowers.
