How to grow Ginger at home

To grow ginger from a root, follow these steps:

  1. Select a fresh ginger root: When buying ginger, opt for fresh root from the farmers market. If you can only find it at the supermarket, soak it in water for 24 hours to remove the agent sprayed on it to prevent sprouting.

  2. Choose a firm, plump root with "eyes," which are the developing ginger stems.

  3. Prepare a seed tray: Plant the ginger root in shallow compost in a seed tray. Keep the tray in a warm spot for up to six weeks until shoots develop.

  4. Pot the ginger: Once the shoots have developed, transfer the ginger root to a fresh pot, topping up with compost as the stems grow. Keep the plant well-watered.

  5. Provide partial shade: Place the pot in a warm spot with partial shade. Ginger plants prefer tropical climates and thrive in warm, humid conditions.

  6. Transplant the ginger: After a couple of weeks, the ginger root will have developed roots and shoots. Gently lift it from the seed tray and transplant it into a pot of compost. Ensure the stem is sticking out at the top and water it well.

  7. Care for the ginger plant: Keep the ginger plant well-watered and provide it with regular feeding using a slow-release fertilizer mixed with the potting soil.

  8. Harvest the ginger: Ginger plants take about 8-10 months to reach maturity, but you can harvest the roots after about 2 months. When the leaves stop producing in late summer, you can harvest the ginger roots.

Remember to choose a warm and humid location for your ginger plant, as it prefers tropical conditions. You can enjoy growing your ginger at home with proper care and attention. 😃

Zero Waste Swap

Zero Waste Bedroom

The hidden toxins in the bedroom

⭐️ One aspect that often gets overlooked when transitioning to a zero waste lifestyle is our bedding, even though we spend half of our lives in it. Many modern bedding options are made with synthetic fibers which are not eco-friendly. Carpets are also commonly made from synthetic materials and even the furniture we use may contain toxic glues. It's important to consider all aspects of our surroundings when striving towards a zero waste lifestyle.

Then there is also the simple hack of turning of any electrical devices and lights, to avoid light pollution.

Key points:

  • swap to eco-friendly bedding

  • houseplants as natural air fresheners

  • curtains and carpets made of natural fibers

  • opt for sustainable furniture

  • use eco-friendly cleaners
