The Great Bubble Barrier

The Great Bubble Barrier is a smart solution to plastic pollution in rivers. It's a very simple and effective approach created by three friends in Amsterdam.

This technology uses a perforated tube that releases a curtain of bubbles to trap and direct plastic waste to the side of the river. The goal of this initiative is not just to remove plastic from waterways.

The Great Bubble Barrier is capable of removing different types and shapes of plastic, from smaller items like cigarette butts and candy wrappers to larger ones like plastic bottles and bags.

In addition, it is important to keep track of pollution levels, promote the sustainable management of collected plastics, and raise awareness among people.

Key points:

  • 🐟 The Bubble Barrier is fish-friendly, allowing marine life to pass through unobstructed.

  • 🚢 The system allows for ship passage, not affecting daily river activities.

  • 🆘 The Great Bubble Barrier is seeking help from the public to fight plastic pollution more effectively.

  • 🍾 The Great Bubble Barrier was a finalist for The Earthshot Prize in 2022 in the 'Revive Our Ocean' category.

Notpla

This company makes food packaging disappear.

At last, we've found a company that truly practices what it preaches. Their packaging doesn't just claim to be biodegradable, it genuinely biodegrades. (Biodegradable is a term that is not regulated so companies can just use it, even though it isn’t true)

Notpla is a sustainable packaging start-up founded in 2014 with a multidisciplinary team, dedicated to combating single-use plastic.

They create advanced packaging solutions made from seaweed and other natural materials to replace single-use plastic.

Aiming to reduce single-use shampoo and soap bottles in Hotels and Restaurants. Replacing food containers, offering coating to make packaging water-resistant yet biodegradable.

Key points:

  • 🌊 Seaweed-coated food packaging: An innovative, eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastics.

  • 🌿 Various other packaging solutions crafted from natural materials.

  • 🏢 The company recently got listed with Bidfood Catering Supplies, making their packaging available to 45,000 catering and food service businesses across the UK.

It excites me to see how innovative humans are and this product could revolutionize the packaging industry.

Zero Waste Mop

Our Mop recently broke, and since this is always a great opportunity to replace an item with a more eco-friendly version, I created this list.

Check it out; you’ll be surprised at what the most eco-friendly mop is and how it can save you money and headaches.

Amazon

The European Union (EU) has committed to boost a plan for protecting the Amazon rainforest. It will coordinate financial contributions from EU members, ensuring the funds are utilized as intended under its Global Gateway investment scheme.

"Team Europe", a group comprising of EU member states and institutes like the European Investment Bank, will oversee €260 million ($277 million) already pledged by Spain, Italy, Sweden, France, Germany, and the Netherlands to combat deforestation in the Amazon.

Over half of the global destruction of old-growth tropical rainforests has transpired in the Amazon and adjacent forests since 2002. These rainforests, especially the Amazon, absorb substantial amounts of CO2 and play a critical role in shaping Earth's climate, making their preservation crucial in tackling climate change.

In July, the EU pledged an investment of €45 billion in Latin America by 2027 through the Global Gateway project. EU and Latin American finance ministers ensure proper delivery and usage of these funds.
