Have you heard of trawling before? Trawling is a fishing method where a net is pulled through water by boats to catch fish and crustaceans. The net, called a trawl, can be towed midwater or along the sea floor(bottom trawling). It has a wide opening to catch marine life and a closed 'cod-end.

This method has a highly destructive nature, capturing and entrapping all marine life in its vicinity as it sweeps across the ocean floor.

A flotilla of crafts gathered off Mission Bay in Auckland in opposition to bottom trawling in the Hauraki Gulf marine park.

🌊 Over 60 vessels, including yachts, kayaks, and paddleboards, joined the flotilla, calling for an end to bottom trawling.

📣 The public mandate for change is clear, with over 84% of surveyed people wanting to ban bottom trawling in the Gulf.

🐋 Bottom trawling puts marine life at risk and destroys the seafloor, affecting biodiversity in the Hauraki Gulf.

🚫 The government is urged to ban bottom trawling to protect the Gulf and not prioritize the interests of the fishing industry.
