Good Eco News

🧪 Researchers at the University of Washington have developed new bioplastics using powdered blue-green cyanobacteria cells, also known as spirulina.

🍌 These bioplastics degrade at the same rate as a banana peel in a backyard compost bin.

When a company boasts about its products being biodegradable, it often implies that the items are compostable in specific facilities, which are relatively rare. Therefore, it's frequently a case of greenwashing - a strategy employed by companies to appear environmentally conscious. It's always advisable to thoroughly examine the product label.🏠 The need for new bioplastics comes from the difficulty of biodegrading traditional plastics and the lack of widespread commercial composting facilities.

🌿 The new bioplastics are made fully from spirulina, using heat and pressure to shape it - the same technique used for conventional plastics.

💪 The resulting bioplastics are as practical as single-use, petroleum-derived plastics with similar mechanical properties.

♻️ These bioplastics are not only bio-derived and biodegradable but also processable, scalable, and recyclable.

📦 These spirulina-based bioplastics could be used in various industries, including disposable food packaging and household plastics. They're ten times stronger and stiffer than previously reported spirulina bioplastics.

Green Gadgets

When I first discovered the mushroom packaging and its multiple uses, I was blown away. Did you know you can even make a leather substitute from mushrooms?

Now let’s look at Ecovative. The company uses nature's technologies like mushrooms and mycelial webs to create sustainable products.

🍄 Mushrooms and their mycelium networks are cultivated at Ecovative for their various benefits and potential in creating durable, sustainable biomaterials.

💪 Mycelium, often described as the 'root structure' of mushrooms, is a unique, strong, and fine network that resists water, decay, and immense pressures, making it one of nature's supermaterials.

🏭 Ecovative coaxes fungi into producing premium quality structures and materials, such as bacon-like fibers, through the use of their AirMycelium™ technology.

🏢 The company utilizes AirMycelium™ growth chambers to cultivate vast quantities of mycelial fibers for various product applications, with no toxic waste involved, fostering a circular economy.

The ubiquitous plastic bags are undeniably detrimental to our environment. Not only do they litter our surroundings, but their gradual degradation into smaller fragments presents severe hazards to wildlife through choking and entanglement.

Conversely, leaves, often viewed as waste in urban settings, are routinely bagged and incinerated. This results in unnecessary CO2 emissions, a situation which is, at best, counterproductive.

Addressing this perplexing paradox, a team of innovators from Ukraine has formulated a ground-breaking solution that is both eco-friendly and sustainable. They are ingeniously transforming fallen leaves into paper bags, avoiding the felling of trees while creating a product that is simple to decompose.

📈 As of 2022, Releaf produces more than 100 tons of paper per month.

🤝 International brands like L’oreal, Schneider Electric, Samsung, Weleda, and Ariston Thermo have partnered with Releaf.

🌳 They work with global organizations to make the planet a better place, including WWF and Canopy Planet.

🎒 Releaf manufactures stylish eco-bags for everyday use. They are the world's first manufacturer of sustainable paper from fallen leaves.

Startups

I don’t have to tell you that plastic is a global problem. Here is a solution to reusing discarded plastic and turning it into designer furniture whilst indicating how much plastic was diverted from landfill creating this product.

👥 Founders Hanson and Mohesan, who first met at the University of Waterloo, are dedicated to identifying problems and creating creative solutions.

🚀 They noticed the stark production of plastic waste at different startups they worked at, which led them to create Plastic Flux.

📈 They are at the start of their journey and eager to move forward with other supporters.
