Cargo Ship Fitted With Sail

A wind-powered cargo ship, featuring innovative WindWings sails, has embarked on its first voyage, substantially reducing carbon emissions for the shipping industry.

It is estimated the industry is responsible for about 2.1% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

The inaugural voyage of the Pyxis Ocean, sailing from China to Brazil, will be the first practical trial for the WindWings technology. This also presents a chance to evaluate if reverting to the conventional method of propelling ships can be a viable option for transporting goods via the sea.

Key points:

  • ๐ŸŒฟ The 'WindWings' sails are designed to reduce fuel consumption, potentially lessening a cargo ship's lifetime emissions by 30%.

  • ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง The technology behind this innovation was developed by UK firm BAR Technologies but manufactured in China due to cost constraints.

  • โ›ต Industry experts predict significant growth of wind propulsion in new-build ships by 2025.

  • ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Despite challenges, wind power is viewed as a key component of the industry's efforts to decrease CO2 emissions.

Shark Collects Plastic Bottles

The water-cleaning robot WasteShark can collect up to 21,000 plastic bottles daily. It was designed and created by Ran Marine, a company founded by Richard Hardiman.

WasteShark's creators dream of deploying these robots globally to clean up the environment while humans sleep.

Inspired by a whale shark's wide mouth, the robot autonomously scoops up pollution at the water's surface level. It can collect not only plastic but also any debris or biomass, like algae.

The Aqua Libra WasteShark has been deployed in Londonโ€™s Canary Wharf to help make the area a healthier, more biodiverse environment.

In addition to cleaning, WasteShark also collects water quality data, contributing to global observations of water cleanliness and potential threats like algae blooms.

Key points:

  • The WasteShark is a zero-impact device that is completely electric and quiet, causing no disturbance to wildlife.

  • ๐Ÿ”‹ It is battery-powered and can travel up to 5km on one battery

  • 8-10 hours of cleaning time

  • ๐Ÿ”„ All collected rubbish is returned to shore, sorted, and responsibly recycled or disposed of.

  • ๐ŸŽฏ The ultimate goal is to use these robots to positively impact our environment by cleaning our waterways.

Eco-Friendly Mops

Sometimes, I am surprised by the articles I am writing, like this one about eco-friendly mops. But After our Vileda Mop broke only half a year after purchase, I figured I would look deeper into this matter.

Unfortunately, I could not fix the Vileda mop as joining plastic with rusted metal isnโ€™t one of my skills.

So, I researched and came to this conclusion down below. Youโ€™ll be surprised how simple it can actually be and how inexpensive it is, especially when it comes to mops.
