Parklets

The Mini Urban Parks

Amid the concrete sprawl of cities, parklets—small urban oases—are revolutionizing urban life and biodiversity.

Compact yet impactful, they provide eco-friendly commuting options and foster social cohesion. Their lush foliage not only brings relief from the city's grey but also cleanses the air of harmful pollutants like nitrogen dioxide associated with respiratory problems in children.

These green spaces combat the urban heat island effect, benefiting all, particularly the vulnerable. Economically, parklets boost property values and local businesses. Despite funding and administrative challenges, these grassroots projects continue to bloom into vital elements of urban planning, transforming concrete into a community one parklet at a time.

Key points:

  • 🌳 Parklets, miniature urban parks, enhance urban living and local biodiversity.

  • 🏞️ They offer extra space for pedestrians and cyclists, reducing traffic and promoting green transportation.

  • 👫 These spaces foster community and social interactions.

  • 🍃 The greenery in parklets acts as a natural air purifier and combat climate change.

  • 🌡️ They serve as cool spots in cities, reducing urban heat island effects.

  • 💰 Parklets can boost property values and benefit local businesses.

  • 🛠️ They can be permanent, temporary, or pop-up and may even be DIY projects.

Roads Made From Recycled Plastic Bottles

Is the Plastic Road the solution

Roads are now getting a makeover using recycled plastic, making them last longer than traditional asphalt roads.

Technisoil Industrial manufactures G5 Binder, a unique road material with environmental and practical advantages.

But how about the fumes being released under heat and pressure? While this might be a good way to reuse some of our plastic trash, it is also a bit questionable, and we need to experiment more to see the long-term effects.

Key points:

  • 🌡 G5's production process emits less carbon, contributing to environmental conservation.

  • 💪 Recycled plastic proves to be more resilient against common road damages.

  • 🌳 Up to 90% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions.

  • ❗ Traditional asphalt has marked health and environmental dangers.

Would you be living near a plastic road? Do you have any concerns or questions?

Vegetables or Herbs From Scraps

There are many vegetables and herbs that can be grown from kitchen scraps, making it a great way to reduce food waste and save money. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • Potatoes

  • Sweet Potatoes

  • Onions, Garlic, Leeks and Shallots

  • Celery

  • Bulb Fennel

  • Carrots, Turnips, Parsnips, Beets and Other Root Crops

  • Lettuce, Bok Choi and Other Leafy Greens

  • Cabbages

  • Basil, Mint, Cilantro & Other Herbs

These vegetables and herbs can be regrown using small parts of the plant or pieces that might otherwise have been added to your compost heap.

For example, potatoes can be regrown from scraps by cutting a potato into chunks and planting them in soil. Similarly, herbs like basil, mint, and cilantro can be regrown by placing a stem of around 10cm/4 inches long into a glass of water, making sure that the leaves are well above the water level.

Roots will soon begin to grow, and as soon as the roots are growing well, these cuttings can be transplanted.

Zero Waste Toilet Paper

Are you pooping sustainably?

27,000 trees are cut down each day to make toilet paper, which is equivalent to almost 10 million trees per year. That’s a lot of trees just to wipe our bums.

Bidets? Absolutely a fan here! I mean, when our hands are dirty, we don't just give them a rub on a dry cloth, right? Exactly the same principle!

However, if you don’t feel excited about a bidet and would rather use TP, then I created an article with sustainable options for you to choose from.
